Here’s my big tip of the week … if you want to learn about UX then create your own product.
Yes, I know many of you work on other people’s products — maybe you’re at a big company or, maybe you’re at an emerging startup. And yes, I’m sure you put a lot of careful thought into what you do. But I honestly believe it’s totally different when you are working on your product.
Congrats on making it through the first month of the year. I find it’s always challenging getting back into the rhythm of work. Everyone is so ambitious at the beginning of the year. The risk with this ambition is that everyone gets excited by the big picture, but fails to execute on the things that actually matter.
Thanks so much for checking out my new YouTube channel last week, I can’t believe we’re already over 125 subscribers. I’ll take this as an indication that you like these videos. I have a lot of reader questions in a queue and I’ll be answering them in some upcoming videos.
As the end of the year approaches, I always like to take a quick little inventory of everything that I was able to accomplish. I like to do this because it’s easy to forget about everything we do throughout a year.
A few weeks ago I gave you a two-month countdown to the end of the year. As the end of the year approaches, it’s easy to get frustrated and focus on what you didn’t do this year. But don’t focus on those things.
About 7 years ago I was working at a startup. I was one million percent sucked into the excitement of it all. So much so that we failed to truly validate our idea. As you can guess, this didn’t end very well. We raised money, got some users, and I learned a ton.

Do you ever watch the television shows about people who live in “tiny homes” – let’s face it, some of them are really tiny. I’m always amazed at couples with kids, sometimes multiple kids, who decide to live in a tiny home.
A few weeks ago I watched the very first Ghostbusters movie. I had never seen it and it was on television when I was visiting my parents one weekend. Bill Murray is one of my favorite actors of all time.
Last weekend I ran a half marathon in NYC and placed 60th out of 1,417 in my age group. The race was two full loops of Central Park, and the park is no joke people! There are a lot of rolling hills and if you aren’t prepared for them, they can be intimidating.
When I travel to a new place, I hate wasting time at the beginning of each day asking: “What should we do today?”. So now before I go on a trip I always try to search travel sites and blogs to find ideas before hand (shocking, I know). Then I make two lists, the “musts” and “maybes”. This ensures I always have a short list of ideas to rely on.
